Cusack Park

In 2013 MMA were commissioned to design the refurbishment of Cusack Park GAA grounds in Mullingar, the home of Westmeath GAA. Cusack Park regularly plays host to Leinster and All-Ireland Championship and National League games, as well as Club All-Ireland Semi Finals in both Hurling and Football. The clients brief was to see radical improvement in both the player and spectators experiences of attending and playing at this venue. This brief focused on the need to provide a roof to the entire stand and to increase the size and scale of player changing facilities to meet the highest standards for elite sports teams.

The stadium is located in the heart of Mullingar Town. The site is very restricted with the existing stadium in close proximity to the main access road. Early engagement with stakeholders ensured that we developed a design that would meet both the clients brief and the councils crtieria for development at the site. An arcing canopy supported by a feature steel truss was designed to create a striking new building on the Mullingar skyline. We then moved the existing administrative rooms from ground floor to first floor, cantilevering out over the original footprint. This innovative design feature created significantly more space on the extremely tight footprint, allowing for the changing rooms to be extended substantially to improve player welfare.
